Marketing for small hotels
Marketing for small hotels: the order in which to do things
A small hotel does not have the budget to do everything at once, and it does not need to. Eight steps in order —from measuring to paid media— with what we found when reviewing real websites and listings of independent hotels.

Marketing for a small hotel works when it is done in order: first measure, then fix what already exists (the Google profile, replies to messages, the OTAs), then the website and the content, and paid media at the end. Each step builds on the previous one, and skipping one makes the next cost more and deliver less.
We say it with evidence: almost everything below comes from reviewing real websites, listings and search results of independent hotels between September and October 2026.
The eight steps
| # | Step | Why it goes here | Effort | Sign that it is done |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Measure | Without a starting point you do not know what worked | Days | You know how many bookings and enquiries each channel brought last month |
| 2 | A single source of truth | Everything else is copied from it | Hours | Rooms, beds and policies identical in the engine, the OTAs, Google and the website |
| 3 | Google profile | It is the first thing someone searching your name sees | Hours | The “website” field leads to your domain and the address matches |
| 4 | Reply | It is the most expensive leak and the cheapest to close | Days | You measure response time and it stays under ten minutes |
| 5 | Optimize the OTAs | It is where guests already look for you | Weeks | The listing turns more views into bookings than before |
| 6 | Website with the engine | The only channel you fully control | Weeks | Its own date search, handing over to the engine with the dates filled in |
| 7 | Content | Reaches people who do not yet know you exist | Months | Impressions and clicks on searches that are not your name |
| 8 | Paid media and social | Multiplies whatever it finds | Four-week cycles | Every paid booking tied to its campaign |
1. Measure before spending
Analytics on the website with intent events (clicks to the engine, to WhatsApp, to the phone), a verified Search Console and the booking engine connected. It takes days. Without it, everything else is opinion.
2. A single source of truth
The booking engine rules. When you check it against everything else, things nobody had seen show up: at one apartment property we operate, the website schema said one number of units, the engine another and reality a third; at another, Booking.com described three bedrooms where the engine said two. Every mismatch is a bad review waiting to happen.
3. The Google profile
It is the first thing someone searching your name sees, and what weighs most in local searches. What we found when reviewing three hotel profiles on 21 October 2026: one sent the “website” button to the booking engine instead of the website, another to an old 2019 site that was still online competing with the new one, and the third to an address without HTTPS and with the postal address of another municipality. None of the three costs money to fix.
And search for your brand on Google now and then: on 25 September 2026, a 19-room hotel whose home page was indexed did not appear in the first eight results for its own name, and in second place there was an affiliate site, generated with AI and registered three weeks earlier, using its brand.
4. Reply in under ten minutes
Whoever writes on WhatsApp has three other tabs open. The lesson on the ten-minute threshold explains how to measure it without technology. It is the step with the best ratio between cost and result.
5. Optimize the OTAs
Booking.com and the other OTAs are where the traveler discovers and compares you. The point is not to run from them but to get more out of them: a faithful listing, answered reviews, a rate that follows demand. It is developed in how to increase bookings on Booking.com.
6. A website with the engine connected
A website of your own with a date search that hands the guest over to the engine with everything filled in —without an iframe that slows it down— and with the basics done right. Three failures we saw repeat themselves:
- The main heading was a slogan without the category. On three hotel websites reviewed on 25 September 2026, the H1 did not say “hotel in…”. Google did not know which search the page was for.
- Any made-up address returned the home page as if it existed, which lets Google index junk URLs.
- AI crawlers were blocked without anyone deciding it, by a hosting provider option that switches itself on. The lesson on how AI search engines find us explains it.
7. Content that answers real questions
Guides that answer what the traveler asks before choosing a destination and a hotel, with your own data and a date. It is what takes longest (months) and the only thing that brings in people who do not know you yet without paying for every click.
8. Paid media and social, at the end
Not because they do not work, but because they multiply whatever they find. A campaign that sends traffic to an incomplete listing or to an unanswered WhatsApp multiplies the leak. With the seven previous steps done, every dollar of paid media has somewhere to land and can be measured in bookings.
Where to start
With step 1, today. And if you want to know which of the eight you are on, the diagnostic tells you in seven questions. The full method develops the twelve stages this order comes from.
Frequently asked questions
Where does marketing for a small hotel start?
With measuring. Before spending on ads or social media, the hotel needs to know where its bookings and enquiries come from: analytics on the website, Search Console and the booking engine connected. Without that starting point, there is no way to know whether what comes next works.
When is it worth investing in paid media?
At the end of the order, once the Google profile, the OTAs, the website and the replies to messages already work. Paid media multiplies whatever it finds: if the guest lands on an incomplete listing or on a WhatsApp nobody answers, it multiplies the leak.
Does a small hotel need its own website if it already sells on Booking.com?
Yes, because it is the only channel it fully controls and the one Google and AI assistants read to understand what the hotel is. But it does not compete with Booking.com: it complements it, with the same information and a date search connected to the booking engine.
How long do the eight steps take?
The first four are a few days of work and cost almost nothing. The website and the content take weeks. Paid media is tested in four-week cycles. What matters is not skipping the order.
